The Road to Hell

This evening I watched Nineteen Eighty-Four. I did a search on Wikipedia for Police State and in a reference to the novel it states:

"...describes Britain under a totalitarian régime that continuously invokes (and feeds) a perpetual war as a pretext for subjecting the people to mass surveillance, policing..."

Sound familiar? I'm sure I don't need to spell it out, but "War on Terror" springs to mind and we're already a Surveillance Society. Blair's Britain.

I wouldn't mind but do all those cameras make the country safer? I don't think so. And catching speeding motorists? The police will come after you even if you haven't been speeding.

The notion of cameras watching us and protecting us is all very well, but the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Orwell may yet turn out to be a prophet.
